Peptalk is Shayna Dunkelman of Xiu Xiu (percussion), Michael Carter of Tyondai Braxton (electronics), and Angelica Negron of Balún (vocals). The band was formed in Oakland, CA after Mike and Shayna discovered a mutual appreciation for mid-century exotica artists like Esquivel, Robert Drasnin, and Martin Denny who used percussion with bird calls, synthesizers and orchestral instruments to envision strange faraway places.
The concept for Peptalk’s upcoming album, Islet is derived in part from the sci-fi and cyberpunk elements of Blade Runner, the haunting and mysterious elements of Twin Peaks, and the surreal tropical vibe of Fantasy Island. It touches on themes of solitude, escapism, and cultural curiosity while drifting between intimate lyrical moments and dreamy ambient sound textures.
Drawing on their love of Exotica, as well as J-Pop, Dub and the many other variants of electronic music, Peptalk’s visceral music combines numerous exotic instruments with lush electronic sounds and airy vocals. They are obsessed with creating a hyperreal world both sonically and visually by blending fragments of memory from their lives in Tokyo, San Juan, and Los Angeles. Visitors to Peptalk’s tropical idyll may find themselves returning again and again.
