Mercury Prize nominee and trailblazer Ed Harcourt is back with Furnaces, the title track off his seventh studio album. Harcourt has enjoyed success on every step of the musical ladder from musician to producer and since 2007 he has been a songwriter for artists such as Paloma Faith and James Bay. He was Musical Director for Beck’s Songbook shows and has performed live with the Libertines.
Furnaces’ gets the blood pumping with a heavy brass opening quietly joined by piano that kicks into an explosive percussion sending shockwave to every orifice. Harcourt unnerves the listener with his eerie lyrics; an empty playground with a bird on a swing (think Hitchcock The Birds) while raspy falsetto creates a heady mix of emotion.
There is a menacing undertone that fills you with a sense of unease but enough of a surging beat to keep you daydreaming throughout. Harcourt stated, “I want to make a record that people can cry, f**k and fight to”. Mission accomplished.
