That moment when it stops raining and the sun comes through. The moment when someone smiles back, or when you got drunk and you realise the next morning you didn’t lose your phone after all. Scotland has a long tradition in uplifiting pop songs with dark twists – a rich history going back to the Postcard label (‘the sound of young Scotland’) and beyond. brownbear are carrying on this tradition – music that gives you an up in a world of downs, changes your day, or just makes you feel better.
“It’s all about the songs,” explains lead singer Matt Hickman. “We just love writing songs and music and hope that people enjoy listening to them as well as taking something away from them. We are big fans of Ray Charles and Johnny Cash, as well as Talking Heads, and if we can write something that catches people’s attention but also means something to them, then we have achieved something. Really, we just love making music.”
Dead Or Alive is the first single taken from brownbear’s forthcoming debut album, currently being finished in Glasgow at Gorbal Sounds, due for release later this year. They have just finished filming their debut video – directed by the award winning Michael Hines (Still Game, Chewin’ the Fat) – all shot in one continuous take. Links to follow.
Having spent most of 2013 on the road playing gigs and festivals – including T In The Park, Liverpool’s Sound City, the Tiree Music Festival and Belladrum, brownbear rounded off their year playing to a sold out Glasgow Barrowlands, supporting Babyshambles, and going out with The View as support on their UK tour.
