Seems a little strange that less than a week after The Dandy Warhols played Glasgow along come The Brian Jonestown massacre…if you are learned in the history between these two bands you will get what I’m leaning to… If not check out the musical documentary film Dig! It’s not exactly clear why relations between Newcombe and the Dandy Warhols’ Courtney Taylor-Taylor turned sour, but jealousy over the Dandy Warhols finding greater success with a more palatable version of a similar sound seems likely. The eight piece Brian Jonestown Massacre touring their latest album offering Revelations are in the city’s O2 ABC tonight and again if you are aware of their live reputation anything can happen especially if frontman Anton Newcombe gets pissed about something!!! The band sort of saunter onto stage and open with ‘Whoever You Are’…..very understated but very effective….. Percussionist Joel Gion takes centre stage and with fashionable disinterest shakes his tambourine.. Things liven up somewhat when BJM play ‘Who” . Four songs into the sey and we get our first glimpse of the new stuff with ‘What You Isnt” a great song that wouldn’t sound out of place as the theme tune for a 70’s American cop series!! An eight o’clock start caught a lot of people unawares and it was by now that the place looked anything like sold out… Matt Hollywood’s poke at the Dandy thing ‘Not If You Were The Last Dandy On Earth” seemed to give a brief but welcome relief to the intensity of the 2 hours of almost non stop Newcombe compositions. A 20-year career condensed into a two hour set was brought to an end with ‘When Jokers Attack’ an uplifting little ditty!!! The thing with the Dandy Warhols is what really attracted me to this gig….was it better?…. it was different that much I will say and the fact that I have mentioned The Dandy Warhols on more than one occasion would no doubt piss off Anton Newcombe no end…not that he’ll ever likely to read this…
