Paul Heaton must surely be one of pop music’s most prolific song-writers penning some of the best known pop songs when he was in the Housemartins and more recently The Beautiful South, Jacqui Abbott replaced Briana Corrigan after Heaton met her outside a night club and was so impressed by her singing he invited her to audition they went on to produce some of the Beautiful South’s most successful hits. The pair have re-united to release a new album ‘What Have We Become’ with a sold out tour sponsored by the GMB to promote it.
Tonight in the O2 ABC Glasgow a sold out crowd have the chance to hear Heaton and Abbott sing tracks from the new album as well as some old Beautiful South and Housemartins favourites
Opening with Some Dancing To Do from the new album proceedings get off to a brilliant start Heaton’s nasal vocals complimented beautifully by Jacqui rich luscious vocals… ‘Old Red Eyes’ has The crowd dancing and sing their hearts out.. This is followed by another new track ‘Costa Del Sombre’….considering the album has only been on release for a week or so the crowd were singing along like it was an old favourite. A good mix of old …’Build’, ‘Dream a Little Dream’, ‘Don’t Marry Her’, and new songs ‘Moulding of a Fool’ (very Style Council influenced)’The Snowman’ and new single ‘DIY’ interspersed with anecdotes from Paul Heaton made for a brilliant night…Heaton managed to get himself on the wrong side of the Scottish crowd by talking about the World Cup ….a sore point in Scotland and was met by a chorus of playful boo’s…but managed to back peddled saying he was only interested in the stickers!!!
Finishing the set with ‘Happy Hour’ and another new track ‘When I Get Back To Blighty’ the crowd weren’t ready to let them go and manage to squeeze two encore’s out of the duo eventually finishing with an a cappella version of the Housemartins cover of ‘Caravan Of Love’….
Old songs are great and its always good to hear them but Paul Heaton and Jacqui Abbott’s new material is excellent and stood up well to the classic’s receiving a tremendous reception from the crowd …..this was a big relief for Heaton as he described performing the new songs like meeting Pele …the greatest footballer of all time only to talk about house insurance!!! A weird analogy but we got what he meant….great gig
