No one could ever describe Newton Faulkner a your typical pop star but when he tours time after time he sells out venues all over the country understandable I suppose when you consider he has 2 uk number one albums Hand built By Robots 2007 and Write it On Your Skin 2012. 2013 saw the release of his 4th studio album Studio Zoo and a tour this year to support it.
The O2 in Glasgow sold out as expected greeted Faulkner with massive applause and adoration that he in turn accepted gracefully if not a little embarrassed, opening with Where To Start track one from Studio Zoo. His unique percussive guitar playing style accompanied with an amazing singing voice reminiscent to the late John Martyn, it was starkly obvious why this singer/songwriter is so popular… When solo Newton Faulkner is best described as a virtuoso displaying his wonderful skills best illustrated on Treading Water where his continuing retuning of his guitar to weave the harmonics into this beautiful song. When accompanied by Sam Brookes and India Bourne the songs take on a different dynamic. Between songs Newton chats with the audience whilst drinking tea that he pours from a cozied teapot…rock’n’roll eh!!
His fans are treated to an hour and a half of amazing guitar playing and hit after hit that included songs from the new album Indecisive, Just Outside and Losing Ground and all the favourites Dream Catch Me, the Massive Attack cover Teardrop, Write It On Your Skin and I need Something…A very enjoyable gig where that the audience repaid the singer with the attention his songs deserved with no annoying chat during the quiet parts…. brilliant.
