The first of two visits to Glasgow for James Bay was The O2 ABC….a sold out affair for the young singer/songwriter crammed to the back walls with teenage girls with a fair number of them emulating their hero’s liking for hats.
Opening early tonight and due to the 10pm curfew were ‘Walking On Cars’…a terrific new band from Ireland but despite their pitch perfect harmonies and superb songs they seemed lost on the young crowd and only just managed a polite applause.
That would surely change for James Bay wouldn’t it?? Another early start for a main act this time 8:30pm saw James Bay and his band take to a brightly lit stage and open with ‘Collide’ …an upbeat rock song taken from his debut album ‘Chaos And The Calm’. After coming clean with the crowd and admitting he wasn’t feeling too well and he was suffering from a cold they continued with ‘Craving’ things were shaping up for a great gig.
My pet hate is people talking though gigs especially when the music demands attention and in an intense set with many quiet songs like ‘Running’ and ‘Need The Sun To Break’ this annoying practice becomes all to evident!
A relatively short set made up entirely form Chaos And The Calm’ was rounded up with his biggest hit ‘Hold Back The River”. Despite being a bit off colour and the rude antics of some of the crowd James Bay played extremely well and delivered…. September see’s him return to the larger O2 Academy and better health hopefully…
